Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What age children do you serve?
A: Our children range in age from 6 weeks to 6 years. (We do not offer a kindergarten program.)

Q: What are your hours?
A: 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Q: Do you provide part-time child care?
A: Yes. We do provide part-time weeks, but we do not offer part-time days.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Children on the Green's board of trustees determine the tuition. Generally, it goes up by a small percentage every year to cover staff raises and materials needed to maintain a high quality program. Please call the center at 973-984-0094 or e-mail for current prices.

Q: What are your child/teacher ratios?
A: Infants 3:1, Toddlers 4:1, Preschool 8:1

Q: What are your maximum class sizes?
A: We follow NAEYC guidelines that require relatively small classes, because young children can become overwhelmed in larger groups. Our maximum class sizes are: Infants: 9, Toddlers: 12, Early Preschool: 15; Preschool: 17.

Q: What is NAEYC?
A: NAEYC is the National Association for the Education of Young Children. NAEYC accredits early childhood education centers that meet its stringent requirements, which are both more strict and more comprehensive than state licensing regulations. Children on the Green has been accredited by NAEYC since 1996. Fewer than 10% of centers nationally have achieved this prestigious recognition. Learn more about NAEYC here.

Q: Are your teachers certified?
A: Yes. All of our teachers have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field. In addition, we always support professional development for all our staff and offer a tuition reimbursement program for them.

Q: Do you perform background checks on your teachers?
A: Absolutely. The State of New Jersey mandates background checks (CARI checks, criminal checks) on all staff. We perform these checks as a condition of hire. We also perform background checks on all enrichment program providers who teach our children.

Q: Are there any other fees?
A: There is a $75.00 non-refundable application fee and a two week deposit that is applied to the child's last two weeks in the center. If a parent is consistently late (i.e., after the center closes at 6:00 p.m.) picking up his or her child, we will charge a late fee.

Q: Do you have tuition discounts for siblings?
A: Yes. Tuition for the second child from a family is discounted 5%. Tuition for the third child is discounted 10%.

Q: If my child is absent, do I still have to pay?
A: Yes. We are committed at Children on the Green to providing the highest quality of services. To do this, it is essential that the financial status of the center remain stable. Staffing and other operational expenses are arranged on the basis of fixed enrollment levels and must be met on a continuing basis. Few of the operation costs of the facility are eliminated when a particular child is absent.

Q: Do you serve meals?
A: Yes. We provide a nutritious lunch and two healthy snacks each day. The cost is included in the tuition fee. Parents will receive a monthly menu and can send a packed lunch as an alternative to what we serve. Parents can bring breakfast in with their children until 8:30 in the morning. (Snack is at 9:30.) We will provide milk for cereal.

Q: How do you accommodate children's allergies?
A: We do not allow pets with hair or fur. We are a peanut-free facility. Parents are always free to bring in alternative meals and snacks. Our teachers accommodate other dietary restrictions or allergies. Our staff are First Aid-certified and can administer prescription epi-pens if necessary.

Q: Do you potty-train children?
A: Yes. As soon as a child shows interest, we encourage and assist with potty-training. We always support parents in their home efforts. A child is never held back in a class for failure to potty-train on a schedule. Children are never coerced or shamed in this process.

Q: Are children in the center immunized?
A: Yes. We ensure that all our children have all immunizations required by the State of New Jersey.

Q: Does your program have an academic component?
A: Yes. Our children are read to daily and books are plentiful and within reach of little hands. Simple science tools such as magnets, magnifying glasses, microscopes and balances are available. In each class, mathematical and science concepts are integrated in age-appropriate activities. For example, water table play teaches measuring and the properties of a liquid (as well as developing fine motor skills.) At snack time, children learn the shapes of the crackers - squares, rectangles, ovals and circles - and "subtract" them as they eat. The early preschool and preschool classes have computers for children's use. Our bilingual teacher provides Spanish lessons to each class once per week. We also offer enrichment programs. For more information, see our Educational Philosophy.

Q: How much time is allotted for physical activity?
A: All our children have free and structured play periods outdoors or, in inclement weather, in our gym, for 45 minutes, twice each day.

Q: What types of discipline/guidance are used?
A: We primarily use redirection. To avoid frustrations, we have multiple copies of popular toys available. Teachers respect children's age-appropriate behavior and help them get along with others in a group. For more information, see our Educational Philosophy.

Q: Is your facility secure?
A: Yes. All outside doors to the center are kept locked at all times. Visitors and relatives or friends picking up children must show identification for access. Parents must notify center staff in advance of any alternative pick-up arrangements.

Q: Do you have an emergency plan?
A: Yes. We have developed emergency plans to respond to different potential situations. The plans are communicated to the staff and local police and fire departments. We conduct regular fire drills per state and local regulations.
