Programs
Infant - 6 weeks to 18 months Our primary focus is on providing a safe environment that promotes in each child a sense of security, well-being and development of basic trust. Each child is assigned to a specific caregiver who is responsible for the care and needs within the contact of the group. Our caregivers allow these youngest of our children to keep their own schedules and provide sensory stimulation and motor skills development opportunities on an individualized basis. Toddler - 18 months to 2 1/2 years As toddlers enter the "ages and stages" within the rapid course of development in their first three years, our caregivers adapt the environment, materials and curriculum to continually meet their needs. Healthy doses of free play are intermixed with small group structured activities. Children at this age gain a better formed sense of self and others and begin to develop emotional awareness and social skills. Development of receptive and expressive language skills are encouraged at this busy, active age. Early Preschool - 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 year olds and Preschool - 3 1/2 to 4 year olds In keeping with our educational philosophy, Children on the Green uses The Creative Curriculum by Diane Trister Dodge and Laura J. Colker as a framework when planning each day's activities. Using a thematic structure, the teachers plan developmentally appropriate materials and activities that develop each child's social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth. Pre-Kindergarten Tools of the Mind is an early childhood education curriculum based on the work of Vygotsky, who views learning as active play and as socially mediated by teachers and classmates. The curriculum seeks to develop cognitive skills such as self-regulation, deliberate memory and focused attention while developing academic skills such as symbolic thought, literacy and mathematical understanding. The curriculum views play as the leading skill-development activity for young children and emphasizes the teacher's role in supporting the development of mature, intentional dramatic play.
